4. Some Techniques in Biotechnology NQ

Biotechnology is the way we work with life. Many of the techniques that are commonly used in biotechnology utilize materials and processes directly from biological organisms that are applied to modify utilize or study biological process themselves. In other words, many of the techniques in biotechnology are not synthetic or created de novo, but are bio-mimetic or bio-inspired. Techniques in molecular biology have played a large role in the basic and applied sciences of biotechnology. As one example, in this lecture, the technique of gene cloning is explained and how cloned sequences of DNA from different sources can be used to construct transgenes and used in genetic modification. This techniques allows applications in Agricultural, Pharmaceutical and Medical Biotechnology that are explained later in the course. We will extend our knowledge of biotechniques in later lectures.
