From Plants to Sequence: A Six-Week College Biology Lab Course

To learn more about Bio-Rad's educational material, visit www.bio-rad.com In this webinar, Prof Dave Robinson and Prof Joann Lau introduce the Cloning and Sequencing Explorer series developed in collaboration with Bio-Rad Laboratories in May 2008 for student research. Profs Robinson and Lau describe their experiences in teaching this course, with full details on the activities conducted in each laboratory session and tips on how to link bench work with classroom instruction. This course provides students with hands-on experience in gene cloning and other molecular biology techniques. Students isolate, sequence, and characterize a novel plant glycolysis gene and add their results to the NCBI GenBank. Students gain experience in wet-lab techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, ligation, transformation, and restriction digests. Using their unique clones, students perform bioinformatics analyses including BLAST (basic local alignment search tool), identification of introns/exons, contig construction, phylogenetics, and they become familiar with different bioinformatics databases.
