Biotechnology Laboratory Technology Program Biotechnologist Biotechnology is the use of living organisms to solve problems or make useful products from biological systems. At Santa Fe College (SFC), the Biotechnology Laboratory Technology Program provides exciting new career opportunities through enhanced science and technical education, while meeting the needs of emerging local and regional biotechnology industries for entry-level biotechnicians. The program trains biotechnicians in a basic set of occupational competencies, disciplined work ethics, and problem solving skills, which can be further specialized through internships. The program is a partnership between SFC, the University of Florida, and biotechnology industry partners. The program's faculty have contacted local potential employers to develop the curriculum and the laboratory facilities to make the program as interesting and relevant to students as possible. Career Potential Associate of Science Degree Graduates who earn an Associate of Science degree are prepared to seek entry-level employment as a biotechnician performing duties, such as, making chemical reagents, operating scientific instruments, preparing samples, performing biochemical analyses, using recombinant DNA techniques, culturing bacteria or animal and plant cells, purifying and/or characterizing DNA and proteins, and collecting and assessing data.
